The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship, commonly known as the UMGF, is a merit-based graduate funding opportunity for academically strong Master’s and PhD students at the University of Manitoba in Canada.

The fellowship is designed to support students who demonstrate strong academic achievement and research potential. Students from all countries can be considered for the award, provided they are enrolled in an eligible graduate program and meet the academic and departmental requirements.

The fellowship provides CAD 20,000 per year for eligible Master’s students and CAD 25,000 per year for eligible PhD students.

Master’s students can receive the fellowship for up to 24 months, which provides a maximum possible award value of CAD 40,000.

PhD students can receive the fellowship for up to 48 months, which provides a maximum possible award value of CAD 100,000.

Applicants should note that the University of Manitoba does not use one university-wide application deadline for the UMGF. Each academic department or unit manages its own selection process and internal deadline.

Students are normally selected and recommended by their academic department before the nomination is reviewed by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Important Notes

Applicants cannot normally apply directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for the UMGF without going through their academic department or unit.

Applicants should contact their intended department early because each department can establish its own application process and deadline.

Receiving admission to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba does not automatically guarantee that a student will receive the fellowship.

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship is competitive, and applicants are selected based on academic merit and other requirements established by their department.

The UMGF should not automatically be described as a fully funded scholarship because the official university information specifies the fellowship value but does not state that the award automatically covers all tuition fees, accommodation costs, airfare, health insurance, and living expenses.
